It was weird how close they all lived to one another. And they didn’t know it until they started working on this treasure hunt together.

“Please?” Marly begged.

Mom thought about it for a second. “I suppose,” she said. “It’s nice to see you excited about something, honey. And I’m glad to see you making new friends.”

Marly wrinkled her nose. This wasn’t about making new friends. It was about finishing this treasure hunt and hopefully finding enough money to go visit her old friend. She got out of the car and followed Sai and Isla over to the phone booth.

“I can’t believe you have a phone booth outside your store,” Isla said as Marly’s mom drove away. “Who uses pay phones anymore?”

“Yeah, does it even work?” Marly asked.

“I don’t know.” Sai went inside the booth. “But this has to be the telephone. Mr. Summerling came to our store a lot. What other telephone could he be talking about?”

The floor of the phone booth was littered with grass and dirt. Cobwebs clung to the corners and the ceiling. And the old push-button pay phone in the corner was dented and scraped.

“Do you see anything that could be a clue?” Isla asked.
